We can confirm that the "Voice+Data 5G eSIM" service is the only Mobal product that supports international roaming.
During the activation process, you will be asked if you would like to enable the international roaming feature (for a one-off fee) but your online account will also allow you to manually disable and enable the roaming feature when needed.
If the roaming feature is enabled, this will not allow you to access cellular data services while outside of Japan but it will allow you to place / receive calls or to send / receive SMS text messages while outside of Japan.
Please note that each time you disable and then re-enable the roaming feature, the roaming fee will be applied each time the roaming feature is activated.
Enabling / Disabling Roaming
Once you have logged into your Mobal online account (MyAccount), please go to:
Services > More Information > Scroll down to Additional Extras
In the "Additional Extras" section, you can then click on the "Roaming Services" tab and choose to "Enable" this feature.
After clicking on the "Enable" button, more information on the roaming feature will be provided below and you can then click on the "Confirm Application" button to submit your request.
The roaming feature should become within approximately 24 hours.
If you would like to disable the roaming feature at any point, simply follow the same instructions and choose the "Disable" option.
Roaming Fees
Each time you enable the roaming feature, a one-off fee will be applied (the amount will be displayed within your account when activating this feature).
For any outbound calls that are placed / outbound SMS text messages that are sent, usage fees will still apply. For instructions on how to locate the usage rates, please visit the following link: Usage Rates Guide
Please also note that if a voicemail message is left for you while you are roaming outside of Japan, a fee will be applied each time a message is left for you (this rate can also be viewed at the link above). To avoid this fee, you may wish to consider disabling the voicemail feature whenever you intend to utilize the roaming service outside of Japan. This includes all services and so it will not be possible to place / receive calls, to send / receive SMS text messages (if you are using a voice capable SIM / eSIM product) or to access cellular data until you have arrived in Japan.
If you are trying to get in touch with someone while outside of Japan, you would be required to contact them using an alternative method (such as via email or by using other applications such as WhatsApp / Skype etc) while connected to WiFi.
If there’s a verification code or message you cannot receive on your Voice+Data SIM / eSIM (due to you being outside of Japan) and you do not wish to wait until your return, you could also try contacting the support team for the app / company the issue relates to (as we are unable to offer further assistance). You can then ask their support team if you can complete the verification process in a different way (such as via email for example).
